Halimah Brugger
A native of Indiana,
Halimah Brugger holds bachelor and masters (
cum laude) degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where she studied with Cecile Genhart. As a Fulbright Scholar to England, she studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Harold Craxton. Upon her return to the States, she continued her studies with Martin Canin in New York City and later taught at the Jakarta International School in Southeast Asia. During the 29 years she lived there and in Australia, Mrs. Brugger prepared many students for international competitions and was herself an adjudicator for the Southeast Asian Cultural Conventions held in Manila, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Jakarta. Just before returning to the United States in December 1997, she was on the international jury for the Indonesian Nationwide Pianist Competition, sponsored by Yamaha Corporation.
Mrs. Brugger was well known as a pianist, chamber musician, and teacher in Jakarta. Her students have been accepted in the best music schools in America, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Australia. She was also active organizing master classes by visiting artists and giving piano pedagogy workshops. During her last five years in Indonesia she founded the
International Music Foundation School and co-founded the
International Chamber Music Society.
Halimah Brugger first came to Idaho in 1997 to replace
Dr. Del Parkinson, who was on sabbatical leave from Boise State University. Since Dr. Parkinson's return she has continued to teach on the piano faculty of the university and has had the opportunity to judge several important piano competitions in the Northwest. Mrs. Brugger has performed professionally in London, New York, Indianapolis, Rochester, Tokyo, Jakarta and Boise. She is married and has three grown children.
