Best of all, Dr. Salmon will introduce some of his own original music!

Friday, April 8, 2011, 9:30 A.M., (optional attendance for festival participants)
• Dr. Jonathan Mann, guest judge, will give a special workshop open to piano students, teachers and the general public:
A Blast From the Past: How Preluding Can Calm Anxious Pianists
There is an entire chapter devoted to the lost tradition of preluding in Kenneth Hamilton's groundbreaking new book, After the Golden Age: Romantic Pianism & Modern Performance.
Dr. Mann presented this workshop for the 2009 College Music Society National Conference. Dr. Houle was in attendance and was so bowled over that he immediately invited Dr. Mann to adjudicate for this festival and present this workshop. This presentation will forever change your thinking about classical music!
Free admission. Recital Hall, Colorado Mesa University Moss Performing Arts Center.
Friday, April 8, 2011, 7:30 P.M. (attendance at this program, or the Thursday program, is mandatory for participants)

An eclectic mix of classical and jazz selections.

Saturday, April 9, 2011, 7:30 P.M. (mandatory attendance by festival participants)
• Winners Recital and Awards Ceremony (see notes below).
Suggested donation: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors & $5 for students; call MSC Box Office (970.248.1604) for advance tickets.
Teachers & Students Please Note:
Prize winners will be announced on Saturday, April 9th, at approximately 4:30 P.M. Each First Prize winner will be asked to perform one or more selections (of the judge's choosing) at the Winners Recital on Saturday, 7:30 P.M.
The Winners Recital will be to HONOR the winners only - it will NOT affect the judge's prize decisions, which will have already been determined. We hope that by doing it this way students will feel a minimum of counterproductive nervous tension for this gala public performance.
IMPORTANT: Students MUST be present at the Awards Ceremony (Saturday, approx. 8:30 P.M.) to receive their First Prize awards, Honorable Mention prizes, and festival participation certificates.
Students not in attendance at the Winners' Recital and Awards Ceremony (or those who failed to attend at least one evening concert on Thursday or Friday) automatically forfeit their prizes, participant certificates and/or other free items that may be given out.
Exception: Some students who could not fulfill these requirements may, at the discretion of the Director, be eligible for Honorable Mention prizes.
All adjudications are open to the general public. There will be a nominal suggested donation fee of $5 per adjudication session per person; however, CONTESTANTS IN THE FESTIVAL (AND THEIR IMMEDIATE FAMILY) WILL NOT BE CHARGED FOR ANY ADJUDICATIONS. For others, an alternative to $5 per session would be a flat $20 fee, which will confer admission to every adjudication session throughout the festival. Fees are waived for festival volunteers (e.g., those who help by being door monitors, taking festival pictures, providing refreshments, etc.). Fees can also be waived in cases of financial hardship; adjudication fees and admittance fees to the Friday and Saturday evening programs are simply suggested donations to help support the festival.
Please do not enter while students and recitalists are performing.
Also please remember to turn off cell phones and pagers and be sensitive in the use of cameras and videos.
Detailed adjudication schedule will be posted approximately one week before the festival.
